Albert, an English Pointer mix, was adopted from North Shore Animal League. He had been rescued from a high-kill shelter in Georgia at three months old. When Joanne went with friends to look for a new dog, she had no intention of adopting one herself. She was merely along for the ride while her friends sought to find a dog of their own. Joanne spotted Albert (who was crate mates with the dog who would eventually be adopted by her friends) and the two have been inseparable since.
Finnegan, a Tibetan Spaniel mix, was picked up as a stray by the Austin Municipal Shelter in Austin, Texas in August of 2001. Although soon adopted, he was picked back up again as a stray in November of 2001. When he failed his temperament test, he was placed into the "Rescue Only" category. That's when Blue Dog Rescue in Austin saved him from the shelter. Julie found Finnegan at Blue Dog and nearly 12 years later, this incredibly good-natured mutt proves that a test can't judge soul.
Ginger, a pitbull, Adopt-a-Dog ASPCA sponsored event on a sidewalk in NYC, Ginger's story is one of brutality, resilience and humanity. Found in a warehouse with her throat cut, Ginger was rescued by the ASPCA. During one of their sidewalk Adopt-a-Dog events, Annie saw her and fell in love with her instantly. There is something zen-like about Ginger, whose tragic story did nothing to break her spirit.
Barkley, a Collie/Shepard mix was adopted from North Shore Animal League, no-kill shelter in Port Washington, New York. At North Shore, rescue trailers are sent to kill-shelters primarily in the South. Just before Thanksgiving in 2011, John and his wife, Carol adopted Barkley and immediately fell in love with this shy, sweet dog.
Annie, a Pitbull, was found running around the Upper East Side of Manhattan one night when a couple out with their two dogs spotted Annie trying to climb into a locked car. They noticed how friendly she was and took her to a rescue group called Posh Pets. At the same time, Ann had begun looking for a new dog. Ann found her way to Posh Pets and fell in love with Annie. Although Annie's physical traits indicate she once had puppies, her demeanor is indicative of a dog with a motherly nature.
Grace Kelly, a Spaniel mix, was rescued by ACT Now Rescue in St. Louis, Missouri after she and her litter mates were found abandoned. Two weeks later, Angie came across the spaniel mix and within one hour, Grace Kelly had found her new home. Her protective and loyal nature makes Grace Kelly the epitome of a best friend.
Sam, a Border Collie mix, was brought to America from the Dominican Republic. Marcia was in Central Park one day and spotted Sam sitting on a bench with his owner. Marcia was so taken with him that she began talking to the owner where she learned that Sam was being fostered. The story is unknown as to what happened to him while in the Dominican Republic but after being moved around to three different families in the first three months of his life, Sam and Marcia finally found each other.
Dexter, a Pit Bull, was 11 months old when Brendon found him at the Humane Society in Binghamton, New York. Found chained to a fence and emaciated a good samariten reported him to the Humane Society. Brendon sought a quieter dog who was also pet friendly. When Brendon went to look, Dexter was the only dog not barking. Instantly, Brendon knew Dexter was the dog for him.
Rocky, a Rottweiler mix, has a fascinating back story. Rocky's original owner surrendered Rocky's mother to Sean Casey Animal Rescue when he went to jail. When Rocky's mother gave birth, the neighborhood came together to train and socialize all nine puppies. When Betty adopted Rocky, he came with a toy rubbed with the scent of his mom and a CD containing sounds of his siblings. To this day, he still has relationships with his biological dog family.
